Wes West @ The Mystic Muse 11/03/21
They say it's the quiet ones you have to look out for and today that proved so correct. A while ago my friend Trish invited me to see Wes West perform at a coffee house , the name of which eludes me now, but there was so much background noise gong on in my rl world that day that it made it impossible for me to hear (although I do recall snippets of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.). So it was by pure chance that I was deep in conversation when Grace Loudon finished her set at The Mystic Music that I didn't leave right away, and as I was talking I wasn't really taking notice of what was going on around me. That was until I heard ABBA's I've Got A Dream. My interest was piqued as not only was this being played acoustically, but it was being sung by by a guy.....Interesting. I quickly shutdown the conversation that I was in and focused my attention on to the artist that was Wes West. When he mentioned that he had only learned the song an hour before, the woman in me was curious as to who had invoked the feelings in him to make him want to not only learn it, but sing it straight away and I silently thanked whom ever it was. Wes was so relaxed and smooth, his voice so calming, that the music just flowed and when I heard the opening lines to 7 Bridges Road by The Eagles, my fave band of all time, I was very much in like. Then when he went on to sing Desperado in a way that I had never heard before I was totally smitten and may have proposed out loud instead of in my head...oops...luckily he laughed it off. Wes readily admits that he sings each song the way HE interprets it and a perfect example of that was Wild Horses by The Rolling Stones. Wes sang it in such a stripped back way that I could clearly hear every word but it was one of his original songs, The Basket Case, featuring his RL daughter that made my night. The way they interacted and the play back and forth on vocals was such a delight that the love they have for each other shone through bright and warm, making what must have been a very special time for them both Wes West you are one artist that I will never tire of and I look forward to hearing more of you around the grid.
