Sully VonSwag @ Midnight Blues 06/03/21
When I woke up on Saturday I had never heard of Sully VonSwag or of Midnight Blues, but before my head hit the pillow later that evening I was sold, lock, stock and barrel, on that relatively new venue and it’s seasoned veteran. What a great place! One of those perfect “dives” where you can smell the history of the place thru the stale tobacco smoke and drinks that have seeped into its pores over decades. When Sully broke into his first guitar chords of “Let the Good Times Roll” and sang those first few bars, I was up and dancing for the duration. He played a somewhat eclectic set but it all meshed, and whether it was The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer”, the Blues Brothers’ “Everybody Needs Somebody” or Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb”, the musicianship and vocals were at the top end of the spectrum. And make no mistake, this guy can play too! Sully was constantly switching guitars to catch tone and tuning and “Purple Rain” was the highlight of the night for me:
“... to have her in my arms to Prince’s anthem, done impeccably by Sully... to see the look in her eyes... feel her breath on my neck as we moved... and feel the pounding of my heart in my chest... the moment where all those combined was one of those moments that one never forgets...”
That “grand finale” just led into more great music that was still echoing when Harlow and I left after at least five more tunes, well past the advertised end time.
I will definitely keep an eye open for when and where Sully might pop up next, whether it be club or open mic, your ears and mine need to be there
