KURT CALAMITY @ KISS ME HARD BEACH CLUB 04/05/21
KISS ME HARD is very cool beach club tucked away on Topanga Valley and owned and operated by Panjana Bellisserian and was the setting for a great hour of entertainment on Wednesday night. I don’t know about you but I love going out to clubs to hear the amazing singers and musicians that reside in SL and I am rarely disappointed. This time I heard Kurt Calamity and immediately knew this guy was a great performer.
In RL, Kurt has been involved in a wide variety of activities involving his first love, music: conducting pit orchestras for music theater productions; appearing on stage as an actor, singer, dancer and musician; singing with the 125-voice May Festival Chorus in a professional, classical music venue; vocal directing; song writing; and studio recording.
Oh and I knew he was an instant appeal to my generation when while sitting at his piano he said, “hey if you want a lava lamp just touch this one on my piano and it will give you one.” I mean really? I am a lava lamp fanatic! So of course I grabbed one.
Kurt also has a crooners bones in that body and he began his set with some amazing tunes. There was “I love you in a song” by the great Jim Croce, “Sweet Baby Jane” by the also great James Taylor! He followed those with “Copper Line” by Croce and another Taylor tune, “Something in the way she moves.” Was I transported back to the days between the late 60’s and mid 70’s ? Oh yeah! Kurt amazingly put his own signature on these songs with vocals as smooth as melted butter. His version of “Guitar Man” by Bread, another great winner by a great group!
Kurt also gave us a heads up that we could click on his FB link and watch him performing this set on video which was pretty awesome too.
His next number showed off his multi talents and was an original written by him and called “Autumn” and so well done.
I tossed him an IM requesting “Seven Years” by one of my favorite artists, Nora Jones and I have to say he did Nora proud with his rendition of it.
The next song was one called “Badge” by Cream, not one that I was familiar with but a great switch up, and lead off to “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel.
One of the things I always look for in an artist, is their rapport with the audience and Kurt scored an A+ with his next song, “Brandy” by Looking Glass (replacing the name Brandy with Ava, one of the gals in the audience).
Kurt finished up his set with a Beatles tune, “I just seen a face”, “Drinkin Bone” by Tracy Byrd and “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison. All in all a great set and for those who like the “rear view mirror” look at some of these great tunes, Kurt will give you your money’s worth!
