Billy Talon and Papa Talon @ Down At The Honky Tonk 24/04/21

Saturday afternoon and I was thumbing though the events, well not literally thumbing, but you get my drift. Anyway, I saw that the club DOWN AT THE HONKY TONK owned and operated by Nathanael Sommerfeld and partner Ophiel Er'el was hosting Billy Talon and his dad Papa Talon with some duo as well as solo tunes. Turned out to be a real Saturday afternoon to remember! Also, I might mention, that Billy announced that they were on live video on Face Book! How cool is that!

In terms of vocals and guitar picking, these guys have cornered the market! They started out with Alan Jackson's "Designated Drinker" and got some real foot tappin going on with their playing and a bit of fiddle in the background.

Between tunes, Billy and Papa Talon had some great dialog, and you could tell they love what they do together. From there, Billy killed it with “I Want To Kill Time With You” by Luke Bryan and had me wishin my sweetheart was there with me. A real namesake tune for the club was next with “Down to the Honky Tonk” by Jake Owen

While Billy rested his vocals, Papa Talon took over with “Learning As You Go” done originally by Rick Trevino. He followed that up with an old George Jones favorite, “He Stopped Loving Her Today." His singing it, along with some background steel guitar, brought it to us in a way that made us dudes want to head home and hug the misses.

“At Least You Cried” by Midland was the next duel number, and I couldn’t help think how great their voices blended together. Well with all that cryin, Billy and Papa came at us with “Ain’t Nothing That A Beer Can’t Fix by Jon Pardi. Ok yes, I had to take a break and grab a cold one but managed to get back as Billy was cranking it on “Soul” a Lee Brice tune. This was a real winner for me, not only for the lyrics but because of the great job Billy did hitting the falsetto on one of the lines. Amazing!

Then it was Papa Talon’s turn again to do a couple more (maybe Billy needed to gargle after that falsetto) and he chose some good ones! “Headache Tomorrow Or A Heartache Tonight” by Mickey Gilley first, and then “Stars Over Texas” by Tracy Lawrence, done in a way that made you want to stand up and salute that Lone Star!

Billy came back with “Dark Side” by Alan Walker, “One Too Many” by Luke Combs with Papa joining in. and for the set ending, “The Dance” by the great Garth Brooks. All I can say is that hour flew by way too fast but I’m sure going to hit one of their shows again. If you like great country, you will too!
